Man of a Few Words

Scripture Text: Ecclesiastes 5:2-3

Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.

Ecclesiastes 5:2

“Less talk, less mistake”, the old proverb said, and that is true. Sometimes we say many words like “I promise you this and that” but many of us at some point broke our promises or vows. Why? Because we are quick to say something than to think first on how we can do it. Never make promises to a child because he will remember it. Do not promise him something and then not fulfill it. Do not be a cause of misunderstanding, faith and trust is at risk. Remember, a child always trusts us.

So also in God, do not let your mouth lead you into sin by not fulfilling your words. God will be angry to those who are boasting with their words. As a Christian, we must learn to think first before we speak. Think ten times before you make a decision and consult it first with God through His Word and in prayer, because sometimes if we hasty to say anything without thinking it first, the tendency of that decision is to destroy our integrity and reputation.

Always consult with God first before you decide. Take Solomon’s life as an example, when God said to him, “ask for whatever you want me to give you”, he answered, “give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” A few good words he requests to the Lord and it was granted to him. Not only that, God added to him both riches and honor too.

We must learn to desire to please God in our few good words. If we make a vow, fulfill it. If we want to serve Him, do it with a grateful heart and God will reward us in our truthful service to Him. Make your words few.

Reflection

1. Are you a man of a few words?

2. Do you fulfill your promises?

3. Do you make bad decisions? How do you fix it?

Remember

Some of the greatest thinkers before and now have a characteristic of being a man of a few words.

Pray

Dear Lord, we want godly wisdom. Please grant us this wonderful gift from You. Make our mouth shut to speak unpleasant words, rather use our mouth to praise You with all Your glory. This we pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
