Jesus the Christ: The Son of David

Scripture Text: Matthew 1:1

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:1

In the first part of this letter, we can see that Apostle Matthew indicated that the Lord Jesus is the son of David.

What did he mean by this?

Here, Apostle Matthew wants to show that the Lord Jesus is the long-awaited King that his fellow Jews were waiting for, who will come from the line of King David, because this is God's promise to King David—when you die and be buried with your ancestors, I will replace you with one of your sons, and I will establish his kingdom. Many Jews longed for God's answer to His promise to King David, because they knew that this king would lead them and live to be freed from the long slavery of other nations to them, such as Babylonia, and in the hands of the Romans at that time.

So many Jews expected a king who will come from the line of king David—a king who's good at war, who will lead them mightily and will make Israel a strong and great nation again.

On the other hand, God’s plan is on the contrary of what they know. Because the son of David will come and will give them freedom—not from any captivity of people or enemy, but from the slavery of sins.

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Therefore, Apostle Matthew wanted to tell his fellow Jews, that God's faithfulness is true and has come, because the Davidic covenant is already fulfilled, in the birth of Jesus, the son of David—the Messiah and the King.

My fellow believer, stand firm on your faith, our Lord Jesus Christ is the Promised Messiah, that He is born to save us from our sins, the Son of David.

Reflect

1. Do you see the faithfulness of God?

2. Are you blessed to know that Christ saved us from our sins?

3. Are you prepared to share this Good News to others?

Remember

My fellow believer, our God is faithful to His promise. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of David who will save all of us, not from any captivity of people or enemy, but from the slavery of sins. Have faith in Him, this is the steadfast love of God for us.

Pray

Father in Heaven, thank You for Your grace and mercy, for I don’t deserve all of these. Thank You for Your faithfulness, for giving Your son, for the forgiveness of our sin. Teach me, Lord, to love You always and follow Your commands in my life. Thank You, Lord. This is my prayer, in the name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
