Jesus the Christ: Son of Abraham

Scripture Text: Matthew 1:1

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:1

In our last study of the book of Matthew, we discussed how the birth of Jesus Christ fulfilled the Davidic covenant—the promised king who led and saved the people, not into slavery but from the slavery of sin.

In this juncture of our study, Apostle Matthew mentioned that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of Abraham.

What is the meaning of this phrase?

In this part, it shows that the birth and life of the Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled God’s promise to Abraham, "in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed." Apostle Matthew wanted to illustrate that Jesus Christ is from the offspring of Abraham—and through Him, every nation will be blessed and will be called a son of Abraham, whether Jewish or not, through faith alone in Christ Jesus.

Although some Jews contradict this truth, thinking that only Jews are considered the sons of Abraham, from the teachings of Apostle Paul, being a son of Abraham is by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Long ago the Scriptures said God would accept the Gentiles because of their faith. This is why God told Abraham the good news that all nations would be blessed because of him. This means everyone who has faith will share in the blessings given to Abraham because of his faith.

Also, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself testified to this by commanding His disciples to "Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world."

In this last command of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew, it is very clear that all nations will be blessed because of this Good News about the Lord Jesus Christ—the Son of Abraham, the offspring of Abraham who brings the blessing of salvation to all nations.

My fellow believers in Christ, we are commanded to share this Good News with others, proclaiming that Jesus is the Christ—the Son of David, the Son of Abraham...

Reflect

1. Do you see the steadfast love, goodness, and faithfulness of God?

2. Do you want to share this Good News to others as the Lord commanded us?

Remember

My fellow believers, praise the LORD for He is good and faithful to His promise; this is the grace and mercy of God to us—to fulfill His promise to Abraham in Christ. Be firm in sharing the Gospel to all—the blessing of Salvation through faith in Jesus—the Messiah—the Son of Abraham.

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness; indeed, Your Word never fails. You are truly wonderful.

Thank You for this blessing of salvation through Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Help us to have compassion to share this fulfillment you have made—so that all nations will truly hear the Good News about our Lord Jesus Christ. All this I ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
