Jesus is the Messiah: Men of the East Come to Worship Him

Scripture Text: Matthew 2:1-2

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Matthew 2:1-2

As we continue to study the book of Matthew, the next chapter is still about the birth of Jesus. This is to show his fellow Jews that Jesus Christ is the King of the Jews and the son of David.

In the beginning of Chapter 2, Apostle Matthew narrates that the wise men came from the east to find the King of the Jews. These wise men were also known as the "tatlong hari," who brought gifts to the newly born Jesus. These traditions are remembered in the Christian way every Christmas season. But as we carefully study, these wise men were not kings—they were Magi.

Furthermore, these wise men were not Jews but Gentiles from the East, mostly in the area of Babylon. How did they know the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah? Many scholars believe it is because of some faithful servants of the Lord. During their time in exile in Babylon, one of these servants might have been Prophet Daniel.

Moreover, as mentioned by Apostle Matthew in the second verse, when the wise men saw a light rise from the sky, they immediately went to Jerusalem. Through this light, they were able to find the King, who is Jesus Christ. After finding Him, the wise men worshiped Him because they knew that Jesus is the Messiah.

In the situation of the wise men, they traveled from a far distance, risking their lives by going to Jerusalem until they found the newly born King, and they worshiped Him. They did this because they believed that Jesus is the Christ, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords.

My fellow believers, remember this: Jesus is the Christ. Be firm in this truth because nowadays there are many false accusations on social media claiming that Jesus is not the Christ and not the Son of God. Instead of believing in them, let us remember these wise men who personally witnessed the prophecy about the Messiah.

Let's be firm in our faith and share the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with everyone, including Jews, Muslims, or any group of people. Again, remember: Jesus is the Messiah, not just the King of the Jews, but the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords.

Reflect

1. Do you see the goodness, steadfast love, and faithfulness of God in the birth of Jesus Christ?

2. As a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, are you ready to risk your life and stand for the truth about Jesus Christ?

Remember

My fellow believer, Jesus is the Messiah, not just the King of the Jews, but the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords. Stand firm in this truth. Jesus Christ is the King—the Messiah.

Pray

Father in Heaven, thank you for your grace and mercy to us by allowing your Son, the same imprint of You, to reach us and save us from our sins. This is too much, Father, for us who are sinners, but I know this is your way of saving your people from our sins and showing us who you are for the Glory of Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
