Deceitfulness of Wealth

Scripture Text: Ecclesiastes 5:13-15

As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand.

Ecclesiastes 5:15

Life is full of misery, loneliness, pain, and regret. When people depend their happiness on money, they will never be content. People want more than they have. Because we are living here on earth, many things distract us, especially with money that can buy anything.

If a disciple of Christ like us is fascinated of gaining too much wealth and has become obsessed in gaining wealth, it can harm us. Why? Because all our effort and time will be consumed by it. Not only that, our whole life will be ruined by money when hoarding wealth. But, do not think that money is bad at all. The love of money can make it bad; it might become our idol if we are not aware on how to use money properly. Money is a good servant but bad master. The author observed that wealth gets lost through some misfortune, and when he has a son, there is nothing left for him. For example, people who toil without rest get sick, and at some point, depending on money to buy cure for health will be meaningless. You will work to buy medicine instead of food, and this is not a good idea.

What is the best thing for a son to inherit from their parents? Proverbs 19:23 says, “The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” Getting out of trouble is a blessing that comes from the Lord. We are naked when we come from our mother’s womb, but we are clothed by Christ righteousness. That is the way to teach a son to fear the Lord. The author said that God will keep him occupied with gladness of heart. So, the son must live in godly living. This is a gift of God to us.

Reflection

1. Do you work too hard to gain more?

2. Are you hoarding something?

3. Do you fear the Lord?

Remember

The deceitfulness of wealth may choke you or suppress you. Keep back from deceitful wealth. Serve the Lord with contentment.

Dear Lord, do not lead us to be tempted by this deceitful wealth. Just give us what is good for us. Always guide our mind to seek first Your kingdom. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
