A Few Good Words but Full of Wisdom

Scripture Text: Proverbs 10:19

When words are many, transgression is not lacking,

but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

Proverbs 10:19

We all stumble in many ways, including our words. If anyone says something and he did not think first before he speaks, he is prone to say something wrong and sin could be present for saying so many words. This could be especially true when people are angry and are captured with their emotions. So how do we control our words if our character is being a talkative person?

According to survey, most women talk more than men. It doesn't mean that women are prone to say something not good, but both men and women have a tendency to say something wrong and sin might be present to both. If they not think first before they speak, that is the problem. I remember Paul's situation in Acts 17:18, A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. The philosophers called Paul a "babbler." What this means is a murmuring sound, or meaningless thought to talk, unwisely or foolishly. The philosophers thought Paul was spreading gossip about other gods that they do not know yet. But actually, he was talking about Jesus Christ, the real and true God of the universe. We know Greeks, Athenians, and foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas. When they heard Paul talking so many words about Christ, they called him a babbler. The real babbler are the Athenians who spent their time talking in worldly philosophy and they invented stories of there gods and said many words full of lies. Sin is present when they speak lies.

The Proverbs encourage Christians to hold his tongue when spreading gossip and non-sense small talks, thoughtless words. However, if we shared the Gospel of Christ to others, we will be wise and God will help us to say only encouraging words when we speak about salvation offered by Christ to those who are called and will understand the message of the Gospel.

Christians, be wise to share the word of God— only speak what is written in the Bible. Hold your tongue from the ungodly philosophy but be wise as Christ as He speaks the truth, and nothing but the truth.

Reflect

1. Do you share your faith?

2. Do you speak the right words in sharing Jesus?

Remember

Few good words is enough to encourage others. Be wise and control your tongue and avoid to speak unwholesome talk.

Pray

Dear Lord, thank You for giving me a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide me. I honor You and praise You. Always guide my tongue to say only the right words. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
