The Joy in Suffering for Christ

Scripture Text: 1 Peter 4:12-19

If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.

1 Peter 4:14

Living in a world where standards and principles are based solely on emotions and the human perspective of what is good, a Christian's life will never be easy. We are called to live our lives apart from the standards of the world, which, of course, puts us against anyone who follows worldly standards. This is because we adhere to biblical standards in all aspects of our lives. Peter begins by addressing the inevitability of trials and encourages believers not to be surprised by them. The term "fiery trial" implies intense testing, understanding that our lives will be at stake as we live out God's will.

How can rejoicing come from suffering through these trials and testing? By recognizing that we share the same suffering that Christ experienced. We will also share in joy once our hope is revealed upon His return, shining in the light of His glory. This encouragement serves as a reminder that we have Jesus Christ, whom we await, and His return should fill us with enough joy to anticipate His glorious return and empower us to eagerly do His will.

It is normal for a Christian to suffer because of Christianity; however, it would be a shame for a Christian to suffer for reasons of sin and unrighteousness. Only those suffering for Christ and His righteousness should find joy in their suffering, as it is this suffering that brings glory to God, not shame. We bear the name and Gospel of Christ, and bringing shame to it is unacceptable to the Holy and Glorious God we worship.

Believers are encouraged to commit their lives to the faithful God, acknowledging His trustworthiness. The emphasis on continuing to do good even while suffering reflects an active and faithful response to trials, mirroring the Lord Jesus Christ's actions, who remained faithful to the Father's will even unto death.

Reflect

What is your greatest reason for persevering in these trials? Is it still Christ? Are you suffering because you're a Christian or because of your sin?

Remember

Embrace trials with joy, knowing they refine your faith and bring you closer to the image of our Lord Jesus Christ. These are trials worth enduring because all the sacrifices we make for God's glory are worthwhile, considering that the joy of His glorious return will be our greatest victory in Christ.

Pray

Our Holy Father, in life's trials, be our comfort. Grant us the strength to endure and find joy in sharing Christ's struggles. May Your Spirit's presence bring assurance. Guide us to live righteously, glorifying You in suffering, knowing that all these trials will end, and we will be with You forever. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
