A New Creation in the Newness of Life in Christ (2)

Scripture Text: 2 Peter 1:8-15

Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.

2 Peter 1:10

As we have previously learned about the virtues of a person in Christ from the writings of Peter, he continually reminded the Christians that these attributes are the fruit of what needs to be continuously cultivated in our lives to live effectively as a new creation in Christ, with a new life patterned according to the will of our Father.

The passage continually provides a guide for spiritual growth, which is the assurance of our salvation in Christ Jesus. Peter wrote and emphasized the importance of continuously honing the characteristics and qualities that make us God's proper people. These qualities, which are the effect of being a new creation in Christ, will keep us from spiritual stagnation, which is not the will of God because these qualities need intentional effort and attention.

These qualities mentioned in the previous passage are the ones that we should strive to flourish as we live our lives. These are meant to be exercised continuously because these are the qualities that we need as we devote ourselves to our Holy God. Without these qualities, we will not be able to be effective Christians, but please remember that the qualities said in the passage are not our gate pass to salvation, but rather it is the assurance that we are transformed in Christ. That our heart has been renewed by the captivating love of Christ.

Our response to the gift of transformed lives involves active participation as we continually are convicted by the Holy Spirit. Apostle Peter reminded us of the significance of our calling and election in Christ, reminding us that even though our salvation is not based on a merit system, the clear indication of a true mark of a Christian possesses these qualities in Christ, which is living out our faith and following our Lord Jesus Christ with our whole heart.

One thing is for sure; we are being reminded by Apostle Peter that life is fleeting, so it is important for him to constantly remind us that we should persevere in times of hardships because we are to be steadfast in our faith, knowing that we are facing a constant battle. But the assurance that our battles are not in vain because we have our reward in heaven, and it is God who continually gives us perseverance to keep fighting through the battle of this life as a believer and follower of Christ.

Reflect

How do you demonstrate qualities of faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, affection, and love in your life as you walk your life worthy of Christ's gospel?

Remember

Let your life be a testament to the grace and mercy you have received. Live in a manner worthy of the gospel, knowing that your efforts in following Christ will never be in vain.

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for the salvation and for calling us to live lives that honor and glorify You. We're thankful for Your word that lights our path in this dark world. Help us to live our lives according to Your will and always be mindful of our purpose as Your people. Strengthen us by Your Spirit to walk in love and obedience each day, for we know this is Your will for us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
