Outdoing Our Brethren's Goodness

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

Scripture Text: Galatians 6:6-10

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Galatians 6:10

Outdoing one another requires a deeper level of love and authenticity from a believer which requires not only efforts, but also sacrifice from the one who is taught by the word. This is because God wanted us to love one another just how Christ loved us with His unconditional love.

Apostle Paul reminded us, as student of the Word, to share and give all good things to the teachers of the word who dedicated their lives to study and teach us the Word of God. We ought to support these people who feed us with God's word and contribute to the advancement of the Kingdom of God.

Take the example of the church of Macedonia, where not in riches do they share their good deeds by supporting the needs of the mission, but in poverty they gave knowing the importance of contributing for the advancement of God's kingdom.

Good works do not only mean material needs, but work that was defined by the word as doing everything in love for God and for our neighbors.

The God who is omniscient will surely give what is due to us. Not karma, because this is not true, but God surely gives what is due to us whether it be a blessing or chastisement and all of these will happen in due time. Which is why Apostle Paul is reminding us to do good and to do good is to do the will of God that is written in His words.

We should not get tired of following the will of God because in God's perfect time, we will surely harvest the goodness that we've planted. Not looking at it as if it is a return of investment, but looking at it as a privilege to do good to someone whom we are in the same faith with.

How should we do this? We genuinely outdo our brethren by loving them how God wants us to love them—being forgiving, generous, encouraging, and by not thinking yourself more highly than others.

Reflect

Do we genuinely love our brothers just how Christ wanted us to love them?

Remember

The Ten Commandments is summarized into two major commandments, and that is to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We can never love God and hate our brethren. In the same way, our love will never be genuine if we 'love' our neighbors, but do not love God.

Pray

Loving Father, I pray for Your overflowing love to abound in me, so I can also be able to share the love that is overflowing from me. Give me and teach me the genuine love that abounds in good works. In Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
