Living and Defending His Truth

Scripture Text: 1 Peter 3:13-17

For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

1 Peter 3:17

In this lifetime as Christians, it will always be challenging to stand up for the truth of Christ and His word. There will always be trials, people who will persecute you, challenge your faith, and mock you because your life is not in line with their values and beliefs. However, as children of God, we are to live our lives in accordance with the laws and standards of God, whether we suffer or prosper.

In verse 13, Peter poses a rhetorical question, reminding us that when we do what is good in the sight of the Lord, God's protection and favor are upon us as we live out our lives for the purpose of righteousness. Does that mean that we are invincible when we do the will of God? No! Persecution and trials still exist even if we do good. However, the assurance that God is pleased with us and that His ears are open when we pray is assurance that we belong to Him.

Peter acknowledges that suffering may still be a part of our journey. However, he reminds us not to be afraid or troubled but to focus on honoring our Lord Jesus Christ in our hearts, as He is holy and blameless.

Peter instructs believers to be ready to give an answer to anyone who challenges our faith, which is our hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Gospel. It is our responsibility to ensure that we are grounded in our faith so that we can defend the truth of the Gospel with gentleness and respect towards those who challenge us. This passage challenges us to be ready to share the power of Christ in our lives.

Even in defending our faith, Peter emphasizes doing it with gentleness and respect. This reflects the character of Christ, who responded to challenges with love and humility.

Our witness is most effective when it is accompanied by Christ-like actions, drawing others to know that Christ is alive in us and visible in our actions and words.

Reflect

1. How do we typically respond to challenges and suffering? Is it with full confidence in the Lord, or do we become anxious and worried about what might happen?

2. Are we ready to defend our faith against all types of false teaching and heresy, knowing that the Truth in Christ is already in us?

Remember

It is our duty to let our lives be a living testimony of the Gospel and Christ's righteousness. In our actions and words, we should radiate righteousness and endure trials with Christ as our foundation.

Pray

Our merciful Father, we pray and ask for Your help to give us peace in times of trials and tribulation, courage to do Your will whatever the cost, and calmness and respect when someone challenges our faith, knowing that You and Your Gospel are the only truth. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
