Scripture Text: John 5:24-26
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
John 5:24
The Hebrew word for "hear" is shema, which literally means "take heed, pay good attention, understand and listen." This word is not an unusual thing for the Jews because they are very religious people. Back in Moses time, they will also remember that the phrase "hear these words" will lead them to the commandments of the LORD (Deut. 6). That is why this has been a part of their prayers. In all the teachings of the Lord Jesus, He was just preaching about the commandments of God and is explaining it in a more detailed manner and with the right perspective of how to follow it, which the Jews of His time misunderstood and took it lightly.
Jesus telling them to hear His words and believing in the Father who sent Him will enable them to have life, not judgment nor death. His words were so true and are reliable because He is the Creator of everything and life was in Him (John 1:1-4). The greatest enemy of life is death. When we hear Jesus' words, death will have no power over us.
There are kinds of death explained in the Bible: death and separation are similar and the same in the Bible.
1. Spiritual death - began at the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve disobeyed the command of God not to eat the forbidden fruit, so sin has been passed on to us. We are all spiritually dead, but upon accepting Jesus, our new life begins.
2. Physical death - because of that first sin, man damaged the image of God in him causing all mankind to die, having limits in its life span to just more or less 100 years of age. But praise Him! He has a plan of saving us already. Hallelujah!
3. Eternal death - eternal separation from the presence of God. To face His final judgment and to suffer eternally in the lake of fire in its unquenchable flame causing you to gnash your teeth because of the tremendous heat while worms are eating up your flesh.
Friends, choose to hear His words rather than be deaf and experience death.
Reflect
1. Do you take time to listen to the Word of God?
2. Do you share the gift of eternal life to the people around you?
3. Do you live each day in surrender to the Lordship of Jesus? How do you reflect His Lordship in your life?
Remember
We are all dead because of our sins, but when we surrender our life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and listen to Him, our eternal life begins.
Life can only be found in the Maker and Giver of it, His name is Jesus. Listen to His words and you will be united to Him and not alienated. You will not suffer eternal death in hell.
