Controlling the Uncontrollable Tongue

Scripture Text: James 3:1-12

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

James 3:9-10

James specifically started this passage to warn the believers that not all are to teach, and teaching has the weightier responsibility and accountability knowing that a teacher's students oftentimes would listen and follow him, respecting his authority and seldom challenge (validate) it with the truth of God's word, the Bible.

All men are subject to the struggle of completely controlling our words because there will always be a tendency for us to be off guard while speaking, which is why a person who can control his words can fully control His whole body.

Then, James proceeds by using figures of speech to emphasize how powerful our tongue is. Not that it is literally powerful, but rather dangerous, considering its influence and effect. It is destructive. It is not used for the will of God alone.

Also, James addressed the duality of a tongue of a Christian who glorifies God, yet curses the people whom Christ has saved from eternal damnation. By doing this, we are violating the command of God to love our brethren and is also a clear indication of hypocrisy. 1 John 4:20 stated that we cannot love God and hate our brothers! This will never meet together.

Our tongues (words) are the expression of our inner composition, and if it is not filled with the word and truth of God in Christ, we would only expect our tongue to destroy and hurt and not build and bless others. His words should always be the content of our hearts, because with this, our words will only be aligned to His will and words.

Remember

Every part of us should be surrendered to Christ since He is our Lord. Every time our mouths are opened, it should be a fountain of His words, not a pit of curses and sin.

Pray

I pray to You, Father, who has saved me from my own sins. Only You can help me, through Your Spirit, for me to bridle my tongue and only use it for Your glory. My mouth is an open grave without You. My aim is to glorify You with all of me and that includes my words and I can only do that through You alone.
