Choose Resurrection to Life

Scripture Text: John 5:27-29

And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

John 5:27-29

The Jews believe that they are the children of God and they hold the promise of inheriting His kingdom and be co-heirs with the promised Messiah. They believed it is instinctive because they are from Abraham's son, Isaac, to whom the promise was given. But they overlooked that God also told them that He is sending a Messiah (anointed one) to them, and they must trust and obey Him (Christ, derived from the Greek word "Christos", which means savior.

Jesus mentioning "Son of Man" in this event was also a familiar word for the Jews. They knew that it pertains to the Messiah, the seed of the woman (Eve) who will destroy Satan and his allies, the offspring of Abraham from whom all the nations will be blessed, and the Christ who will save every one who believed in Him. He used the word 82 times across the synoptic gospels as a way to refer to Himself (32 times in Matthew, 14 times in Mark, 26 times in Luke, and 10 times in John). This is very known to them from reading the book of Daniel 7:13-14; prophet Daniel, in his vision, saw some one like a "Son of Man" coming with the clouds in heaven. He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey Him. His rule is eternal—it will never end; His kingdom will never be destroyed. This means that the "Son of Man" will rule over all the earth and will be the Judge of everything.

The "Son of Man" is divine, is God. This is why when Jesus uttered in Mark 14:62, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven." And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? You have heard his blasphemy" (Mark 14:63-64a).

He is telling the Jews then, and is saying to us today, "I am the Messiah, believe in Me, I can protect you because the day is coming and is now here that I will also be your Judge. On that day everybody will hear my voice and I will raise them up, those who have done good things (those who believed and accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior) to the resurrection of life (eternal life in heaven), and to those who have done wicked things (those who did not accept Jesus as Lord and Savior) to the resurrection of judgment (eternal punishment in hell)."

Reflect

1. Do you need a Savior for that judgment day?

2. Have you put your trust in Jesus, the Messiah?

3. Has your family and friends trusted Jesus?

4. How will you help them not to experience resurrection to judgment?

Remember

Jesus will one day bring everything to judgment. Put your trust in Him and obey Him and be resurrected for life and enjoy being with His presence forever.

Pray

Father, I thank You for giving Your Son Jesus. Thank You for giving me a Savior that upon following Him, I will be with You forever. I pray for knowledge and wisdom so I can completely obey my Lord and be able to reflect His life on me everyday. These I pray in Jesus' Name, my Lord and Savior. Amen.
