A Heart for His Flock

Scripture Text: 1 Peter 5:1-5

And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

1 Peter 5:4

The passage begins with Apostle Peter giving a reminder to elders in the Christian community, specifically to the church. He emphasizes the importance of shepherding the Lord's flock with a humble heart, echoing Christ's desire for His people to be loved and guided by trusted elders.

Apostle Peter then addresses the elders of the church, who function as the shepherds, urging them to serve not out of obligation or force, but from a heart that beats with the passion to serve and shepherd God's people. The driving force behind church leadership should always be a genuine desire to serve and a devotion to follow God's will through the eldership role. This calling allows no room for selfishness or self-centeredness.

The abuse of power in Christianity was never taught by our Lord Jesus Christ. Being an elder is not about bossing around ministers so that you can sit down, relax, and enjoy your cup of coffee. Christ set the perfect example by demonstrating servant leadership – fully surrendering to the will of the Father with humility, service, and a willingness to work hand in hand with the people entrusted to the elder's care. Leaders are to imitate the Chief Shepherd, Jesus, who leads with love and compassion.

While speaking to the eldership, Apostle Peter reminds the youth and encourages them to submit to the leadership and authority given to the elders. These elders, according to God's standards, are tasked with ruling over His people. We are to submit to them with humility, understanding that these individuals will oversee and lead us closer to Christ for the advancement of His kingdom. Any elder failing to do so fails to function as an elder.

Humility towards our brethren and towards God is the way for us to be in harmony with one another, recognizing that we share the same calling as Christians – to worship God, serve the Church, and make disciples for our Lord Jesus Christ.

After enduring the hardships on earth, we can look forward to the glorious appearing of our Lord, for which we will be rewarded by Christ.

Reflect

1. To the elders: Do you ensure that you are serving the church with humility and passion, recognizing that God has entrusted you with this noble task?

2. To the youth: Are you submitting to the authorities of the elders with humility, knowing that they will guide and assist you on your spiritual journey?

Remember

When Christ came down to this world, He already showed how much humility He possesses, knowing who He truly is. Despite being God, He gave His life for us, demonstrating His genuine care for us. Thus, Peter reminds the elders to love and serve the flock, just as Christ humbly did, understanding how much our Father loves and values us.

Pray

We pray to our Heavenly Father, asking for a humble heart where serving one another becomes the desire and passion of our hearts. Strengthen the bonds of fellowship among us, making us a source of support and encouragement for each brethren in Christ as we move towards your mandate to advance your kingdom.
