Who's in Control?

Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 5:9-12

But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

2 Corinthians 5:11

Paul wrote a letter to the Corinthian church who wanted to ignore such problems. The Corinthian church did not realize that as they allow the public sin to exist in the church, they will affect all the members. Although Paul does not expect anyone not to commit sin, all believers struggle with sin daily. However, Paul is speaking against those who are committing sin intentionally, feeling no guilt, and refusing to repent. This kind cannot be tolerated in church because it will affect some other members. That is why we have the responsibility to correct and protect other members in our church. When sin is left uncorrected, it will confuse the members and may cause divisions in the congregation. That is why we must not allow sin to jeopardize the spiritual health of the church.

Paul is making it clear that he was not talking about the unbelievers that we should not associate with else, we could not be able to carry out the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20). Paul is saying that we need to distance ourselves from the people who claim to be Christians, yet continue enjoying worldly pleasures. They continue to sin even it is explicitly forbidden in the Bible. By rationalizing sin, these people harm others whom Christ died for and darkens the image of God in themselves. A church that includes such person is not deserving to be the light of the world. Church leaders must be ready to correct and protect, in love, for the spiritual harmony of members.

Reflect

1. What has been changed in the life of a true Christian?

2. Has there really been changes in your life?

3. Did you totally surrender your whole life to God?

Remember

Real Christians are brand new (Christian) people in the inside. We were given a brand new life by the Holy Spirit. We are not the same anymore. We are not reformed, rehabilitated, nor reeducated—we are re-created, reborn, living in vital union with Christ.

Pray

Dear God, as we continue in our life journey, may You continue to prepare our way as we follow Your footsteps. Wherever You lead us, we will follow You. Lord, keep us away from any troubles, tribulations, and wrongdoing. Thank You for Your promises that we hold on to—never to leave us, never to abandon us. In Your Name, amen.
