Sealed by God

Scripture Text: Revelation 7:1-17

Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”

Revelation 7:2-3 (ESV)

Important documents such as marriage licenses or certain contracts often have a seal on them. Some are fancy; others are plain. The important thing is not what the seal looks like but what it does. A seal is an authenticating mark that validates the document.

At the end of Revelation 6, those who realized that the time of God’s wrath had begun asked, “Who can withstand it?” Today’s chapter provides the answer: only those marked by God as His. This section is a pause or interlude that focuses on two important groups. One group is made up of 144,000 people drawn from the twelve tribes of Israel (see Rom. 11:25–26).

Another larger multitude is “from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb” (v. 9). While the 144,000 from the twelve tribes of Israel are on earth, this much larger multitude appears in heaven. “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (v. 14). This is the group of Gentiles who will be saved during the pouring out of God’s wrath described in the chapters that follow.

The promises of verses 16 and 17 probably allude to some of the sufferings they experienced during this period of tribulation, including hunger, thirst, and scorching heat. The text does not say why they suddenly appear in heaven at this point, but the fact that they came “out of” tribulation seems to imply that they are another company of martyrs.

Reflect

 1. How do you face the idea of being part of God's chosen people, as suggested in the passage? How does this impact your sense of purpose and responsibility in your faith journey?

2. Reflect on moments in your life when you felt distant from God. In light of the passage, how can you personally draw closer to God and experience the reassurance of His presence in times of struggle?

3. Consider the call to worship in this passage. How does your personal worship life align with this divine invitation, and what steps can you take to make your worship more authentic and transformative?

Remember

To the believers-followers of Christ, there is the assurance of God's protection and salvation for a diverse multitude of people from every nation. The passage emphasizes the sealing of the 144,000 and the vision of an innumerable multitude praising God before His throne. They must see that God's salvation is inclusive, encompassing people from all walks of life, and is exclusive to those who have washed their robes with the blood of the Lamb, and they are clean and white, brought about by their faith in Christ and remain faithful will be secure in God's love and presence. This is true for those who trust in God's promises.

Pray

Heavenly Father,

I'm grateful for reminding me that Your salvation includes a person like me and for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for with His blood I am washed and clean and white. Teach me to remain faithful and be secured in Your love and presence. I find comfort in Your protective seal; I trust Your divine protection in my concerns. Seal me with Your Spirit for confidence each day.

Guide me to align my heart with Yours in gratitude, adoration, and surrender each day. May my journey of faith be steadfast, finding joy in worship and trusting in the assurance, protection, and hope through Jesus Christ.

In His name, I pray. Amen.
