Lesson from the Past

Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.

1 Corinthians 10:11

In this chapter, Paul wrote to the Corinthian church about Israel as an example of spiritual immaturity. It is shown in their overconfidence, and lack of self-discipline. That is why in verse 5, God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. These are the consequences of their stubbornness. Now these things happened as a warning to us, that we would not desire evil things. We must not be idolaters, we must not be involved in vices, sexual immoralities. We should not put Christ to the test, and we should stop complaining.

Paul warned the Corinthian believers not to complain. We start to complain when our attention shifts from what we have to what we don't have. Before we judge the Israelites' mistakes, it is helpful to think about what occupies our attention most of the time. Are we grateful for what God has given us, or are we always thinking about what we would like to have?

Don't allow your unfulfilled desires cause you to forget God's gifts of life, family, friends, food, health, and work.

Reflect

1. What have we learned from the lives of the Israelite people?

2. Why is it that God was not pleased with most of them?

3. What are the consequences of being rebellious for most of them?

Remember

Paul warned the Corinthian Church not to follow the bad examples of the Israelite people who suffered and died in the wilderness because of their unfaithfulness to the Lord.

Not only for the Corinthian Church, but for us church today. Let us always be faithful, obedient, and disciplined followers of Jesus Christ.

Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the rebuke and correction, for making me see my unfaithfulness. Make my heart one that is so loyal and devoted to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
