Faithful Until Death

Scripture Text: Revelation 2:8-11

Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the Devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will have affliction for 10 days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Revelation 2:10 (HCSB)

Savithri was a woman in India who became a follower of Jesus. Because her village was primarily Hindu, nobody objected when her husband beat her to death after she refused to renounce her Christian faith.

Savithri’s strong faith did not shield her from death. We should not be surprised by this. Jesus warned His disciples that standing for the gospel can be dangerous. “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved”.

Smyrna was a wealthy seaport city, containing both a center for emperor worship and a large Jewish population. In this cultural environment the church was a religious minority whose message provoked Jews and Gentiles alike. These Christians suffered economically and sometimes physically for their devotion to Jesus Christ. They were slandered and abused.

In order to encourage the suffering church in Smyrna, Jesus reminded them of three important truths. First, He was aware of their situation: “I know your affliction and your poverty” (v. 9). Second, things were not what they seemed. Although they may have been poor by human standards, these believers were rich in God’s eyes. Third, their suffering was only temporary (v. 10). In the scope of an eternal perspective, it would be a relatively brief period of time.

What does God expect from those in such an environment? In a word, faithfulness, not survival: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (v.10); the unfading crown of glory; the victor’s crown.

Reflect

1. What does it mean to be "rich" in faith despite facing tough times and difficulties?

2. How can this help your own faith journey?

3. Jesus says to be faithful "until death" in verse 10. How can you strengthen your faith and stay committed, even when you face challenges or opposition in your life?

Remember

Believers-followers of Christ, see the importance of unwavering faith and perseverance in the face of trials and difficulties. Christ through the apostle John encourages His believers-followers to remain faithful, even in the midst of tribulations, and not to fear the "second death." Faithfulness to Him is being "rich" with spiritual blessings despite material poverty.

Hold on in faith and trust in God's promises, even when facing challenges and opposition, knowing that there is an ultimate reward for those who remain faithful.

Pray

Heavenly Father, I am grateful for the reminder of the importance of unwavering faith and the promise of eternal life. Please help me to understand what it means to be "rich" in faith, even in the midst of our trials and difficulties. Grant me the strength and wisdom to rely on You and not be discouraged by the challenges I face.

I thank You for the assurance that I need not fear the "second death" when I have placed my trust in You. Help me to hold fast to this truth, finding comfort in the hope of eternal life with You. I ask from You the perseverance to remain steadfast in my faith journey. May I be a shining example of your love and grace, even in the face of opposition and adversity. I ask for your guidance, strength, and encouragement continuously in my life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
