Discipline is a Must

Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

1 Corinthians 9:26-27

In this passage, Paul emphasizes a life of strict discipline. The Christian life involves both freedom and discipline. The goal of Paul's life was to glorify God and bring many people to Christ. So, he stayed free of any trouble while he was strictly disciplining himself to carry out his goal to reach many people for Christ.

Paul gives several important principles for ministry:

1. Find common ground with those you contact.

2. Avoid a know-it-all attitude.

3. Make others feel accepted.

4. Be sensitive to their needs and concern.

5. Look for opportunities to tell them about Christ.

These systems are just as valid for us as they were for Paul.

Winning a race requires purpose and discipline. Paul uses this illustration to explain that the Christian life takes hard work, self-denial, and tiring preparation. As Christians, we are running towards our heavenly reward. The essential disciplines of prayer, Bible study, and worship, equip us to run with strength and stability. Let us train diligently and not carelessly for our spiritual progress depends on it.

Reflect

1. What must we do in order for us to achieve our goal?

2. What are some of the requirements we need so that we will not fail?

3. Are we willing to undergo the required preparation for discipline?

Remember

If we will do our part to discipline ourselves, like hard work, self-denial, and tiring preparation, we will soon achieve our heavenly reward.

Pray

Dear God, thank You so much for the example of the life of Paul. As we continue to follow You, help us to discipline ourselves like an athlete who exercises self-control in all things. Help us, Lord, to do all these things not for our praise but for Your glory and honor. In Jesus' mighty Name. Amen.
