The Sum of All Beauty in Our Eyes – Jesus!

Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 1:16-17

Behold, you are beautiful, my beloved, truly delightful.

Our couch is green;

the beams of our house are cedar;

our rafters are pine.

Song of Solomon 1:16-17

So far, in our journey of knowing how much God loves us in Christ Jesus, we have as well kept on saying that the real believer’s heart is awakened to perceive the wonders of God in the person of our Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ. It is to say that we all, with unveiled face, are beholding the glory of the Lord. This is such a blessing that we don’t deserve, for we all know that because of our own downfall and darkness (v.5), we are not deserving of anything beautiful and good in this life. Yet, in God’s amazing grace displayed in Christ Jesus, He has restored us to Himself, and has given us the highest of all delight – Christ Himself, His own dear Son! And because of this same grace, He has allowed us in the richness of His mercy and in the depths of His infinite and unchanging loyal-love, to behold His beauties and excellencies in the face of His Son, our Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

As the poem continues, the maiden [bride of Christ] returns her Beloved’s [Christ] commendation or praise, “Behold, you are beautiful, my beloved, truly delightful. Our couch is green; the beams of our house are cedar; our rafters are pine” (vv.16-17); She begins by praising (back) her Beloved’s beauty, and in it, she truly delights! Every good word from Christ is to be turned to His own praise, indeed! She finds her satisfaction in her possession of her Beloved by saying “my beloved”, and in the intimacy that they share, “our couch is green”! She as well is enjoying their closeness to each other’s hearts, and they both find one another as their loudest longing.

Such is the case of a real believer! We find ourselves exactly the same with the maiden. Every commendation and praise that we receive in Christ and because of Christ, is a praise for His glorious grace! It magnifies His beautiful work(s) in us! We now learn to find everything in Him! We now see clearly that He is all that we truly need! We now realize that life is meaningless, hopeless, and valueless apart from Him! We now understand that it is our greatest blessedness to have Christ in our lives! And by it, we now therefore find our Jesus Christ as the sum of all beauties! We find Him as our highest delight, our greatest longing, our ultimate consolation, and our supreme treasure!

The real believer’s heart is awakened to perceive the wonders of God in the person of our Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ! From there, we learn to enthusiastically acclaim, oh taste and see that the LORD is good!

He who does not want know more of Him, knows nothing of Him yet…

Hear this then, dear saint! Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Desire communion with Him, who has loved us eternally! Thirst and long for Him! Be in awe of Him – the darling of Heaven! He is all yours… He is all-perfect, all-holy, all-glorious and all-happy! Be exceedingly joyous in being His beloved. If you have truly seen Him, then He is your exceeding joy.

Nobody loves you like He does…

Christ is all that we have! Christ is all that we need!

Take heart, dear saint!

Reflect

1. Are your eyes and affection fixed only on the Lord Jesus Christ?

2. How much do you enjoy your intimacy with your Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ?

3. Do you desire and long to love Him more, as you ought to be?

Remember

One who has Christ has all that he/she needs and needs no more.

Pray

Father, we come before You in prayer, with confidence because of the work that Your own dear Son has accomplished on our behalf, that through Him we have received grace upon grace, and we can approach before Your throne knowing that You will not reject us. Father, we ask that You make our hearts so captivated by Your Son, that in this life we may learn to truly cherish Him, for He is all that we need, and all that we really have. It doesn’t matter what’s lacking in us, as long as we have Him, our Beloved. This we pray, in His Name. Amen.
