The Promise Keeper

Scripture Text: Judges 2:1-5

Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done?

Judges 2:1-2

The entire Bible testified that God never broke the covenant with His people (Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob). He fulfilled it. He used also His other servants for the fulfilment of the covenant, like Joseph, Moses and Joshua, to save and spare the lives of Israel's people from the severe famine, from the slavery in Egypt, and brought them to the promised land until they received a great provision from the Lord, the inheritance land.

Unfortunately, the people (Israelites) were the one who broke the covenant with God, because of their evil desires, stubbornness, and lack of wisdom. They made their own covenant with the inhabitants in the land and worshiped their idols. What they did was apostasy to the Lord. They totally disobeyed the voice, the will of God, and committed a terrible sin against the mighty Lord.

However, when they heard the message from the angel of the Lord, they started crying loudly, and they offered sacrifices to the Lord (vv. 4-5).

"So now I say, I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.” (v. 3)

Often times, when God's people are trapped in their earthly desires, that's the time they realize the consequence of their sins—they suffered the difficulties in life, unending problems, continuous struggles and troubles, because they disobeyed the Lord and they were subjected to the divine discipline.

When God promised to send His only Son on earth to save human kind, He fulfilled it. God loved His people and graciously saved them. Whether they like God or not, He remains the Lord-God, Savior and Creator.

Therefore, as His people, we should not break our covenant with God through our Lord Jesus Christ forever! We should obey His will always, we should hear and follow His voice at all times, we should never entertain any idols in our lives. Finally, we should worship and serve Him forever until Jesus comes!

Reflect

1. How important to you is the covenant of God? Do you keep and value it?

2. Do you obey His voice and instructions?

3. Do you still have any idols in your life?

Remember

God fulfilled His covenant through His Son, Jesus Christ. He never failed on this promise with His people and He never breaks it.

Therefore, we should not break our covenant with God. We should fulfill our oath to our Lord Jesus Christ as His faithful servant through the help of the Holy Spirit.

Pray

Great God, the Father, worthy are You Lord, hosanna in the highest! Blessed are You. Great are You! For You are a promise keeper. I could have been the most miserable, had You been an ever changing God. But You never break Your covenant, You keep Your words.

So Father God, being one who fulfills His words, my only acceptable response is to be thankful, and the evidence of my gratitude is to be obedient to You, to Your words. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen!
