The Passover of the Lamb

Scripture Text: Joshua 5:10

While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho.

Joshua 5:10

Passover was God's way to save His people (Israel) from slavery in Egypt and He commanded them to celebrate and to commemorate the Feast of Unleavened Bread beginning on the 14th day of Abib or Nisan (modern March or April) throughout generations as a statute forever.

The new generation led by Joshua followed God's command and observed Passover for the first time in Canaan. This young generation who entered the Promised Land faithfully obeyed the Lord and required them to participate in the feast as part of the Lord's people by letting all males to be circumcised in order to fulfill God's covenant.

In the New Testament (NT) church, there is a parallel in that baptism (the sign of membership of God's people) and it would ordinarily proceed to participating in the Lord's Supper. Similarly, the circumcision of the heart was required prior to eating on the Passover.

As the Feast of Passover was a commemorative meal (Exodus 12:14), also the Lord's Supper was a memorial supper, recalling and portraying Christ's death for sinners. The Lord's Supper was first celebrated by Jesus in connection with the Passover meal. Apostle Paul described the original Lord's Supper as conducted by Jesus in the upper room. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the divine perfect sacrifice Lamb and His blood was shed for the sinners. Concerning the Bread, it symbolizes Christ's divine body and the Cup symbolizes the new covenant between God and His kingdom people, sealed by the shedding of Christ blood.

Therefore, we are sinners and we have no right to boast our spiritual salvation because we are already dead in our trespasses but God saved us. He circumcised our hearts to be His proper people through Christ's grace and mercy and made us alive for eternity. That' s why we must faithfully celebrate His Passover or Lord’s Supper with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. This is part of our true worship to our God through Christ Jesus.

Reflect

1. Do you faithfully celebrate Lord Supper with a clean heart?

2. Do you value the divine sacrifice of Christ Jesus for sinners like us?

Remember

Lord's Supper is commemorating the death, the resurrection and the return of our Lord Jesus for His people that's why we, as genuine Christians must value it.
