The Inheritance One Desires

Scripture Text: Joshua 13:1-33

To the tribe of Levi alone, Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

Joshua 13:14

The Lord reminded Joshua that he was already old, but much of the land remained unconquered (v.1). However, the Lord assured him that He will help the people of Israel to conquer all the land to fulfill His promise to Abraham. Joshua then talked seriously to the Israelites, and he encouraged them that God assured their land inheritance. They praised and thanked the Lord.

On the other hand, the tribe of Levi had no land to be inherited because the Lord God of Israel is their Inheritance. He Himself would be the gift for the tribe of Levi. Their possession is to have a share of the offerings to the Lord God of Israel (vv.14 & 33).

The Levites were chosen by God as human priests to serve the Lord and also to support the spirituality of the people, while the eleven tribes who inherited the land were responsible and obliged to give their givings (tithes, offerings) to honor the Lord and to support the ministry of Levites for the Lord. And part of the givings they received from other tribes were the parcel of land in the cities where they live in, along with pasturelands for their cattle and livestock to be used for sacrifices and offerings to the Lord.

God showed His faithfulness to His people (Israelites) and He is true to His promises and He never failed. God is so merciful, His love never ceases. Because of His grace, He forgave our sins and redeemed us through the blood of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Lord adopted us as His sons and daughters. He is the only mediator of the new covenant and we are under His covenant. Jesus called us to receive eternal inheritance through the Holy Spirit.

Reflect

1. What inheritance do you desire the most?

2. How do you feel when you receive earthly inheritance like land, properties, or possessions?

3. Do you desire Jesus Christ as your eternal inheritance?

Remember

God's desire is to save all people's soul. Those who are called and accepted the Lordship of Christ may receive eternal inheritance. However, those who rejected the Lordship of Christ surely will receive eternal punishment.

Pray

Dear God, I accept and continue to recognize that I am a sinner, but because of Your grace, You forgave my sins and redeemed me from eternal punishment. Thank You, because You gave me an eternal inheritance. I pray that all people will also have this kind of inheritance coming from God, the Father. In Jesus' mighty Name. Amen!
