The Far Excellence of Christ’s Love

Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 1:2b

For your love is better than wine;

Song of Solomon 1:2b

To be the beloved (Recipient of God’s Everlasting love & to be His bride) is the fullness of enjoyment of all the blessings. To desire His love is the highest of all delights, the greatest of all pleasures, and the furthest of all completeness. It is where we truly learn that His steadfast love is better than life itself! It is to comprehend that His endearment, loving care, or His treasuring and cherishing of us, are more desired than any other delights, pleasures, and completeness that we can ever attain or receive in this world.

That is why it is truly a joy beyond joy to be the beloved (His bride)! It is where we truly realize that ”Your [His] love is better than wine! (v.2b).” The Scriptural emblem of wine, which is intended to be the symbol of the richest earthly joy, has become desecrated or negatively taken by people in passage of time by the sin of man. It is intended to be a sign of joy, pleasure, and celebration in the goodness of God’s providence, especially for His worshippers! The love of Christ is far excellent because it is exclusively given to His chosen people! Not everyone is being peculiarly treasured and cherished by Christ – only those whom the Father has given to Him. That’s why it is truly an unspeakable joy!

Think, dear saint, of Christ’s Covenantal-love, the love that He had to us before the world was. The love that has no beginning nor end. He is no new lover of His beloved/bride; He loved us before the day that stars knew their places, or the trees learn to stand mightily on its own, or even the planets began their systematic revolutions. Every soul whom Christ’s loves now, He loved them forever and ever! Indeed, nothing can separate us from the love of Christ! (Ephesians 1:4-5)

Think, dear saint, of Christ’s forbearing love, the love which looked upon us when we were born and saw us full of sin and iniquity, yet loved us! The love that foresaw your every fall, every backsliding, nevertheless fixed His tender heart upon you! (Romans 3:25)

Think, dear saint, of Christ’s accepting love, the love which no sin, iniquity, and transgression is too great for it to reject or not accept it! (1 Timothy 1:15)

Think, dear saint, of Christ’s forgiving love, the love which gave you an unutterable joy and indescribable bliss when your heart heard His comely voice, ”I have bore your sins in my own body on the cross, I have carried the great load of your transgressions, I have blotted them out like a cloud, and they are from you forever!” (Romans 5:8)

These are but a few remarks of the far excellence of Christ’s love to us! Is there anything greater than this? A love that is truly better than wine, is it?

Shouldn’t it be your greatest and highest achievement to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength?

Hear this then, dear saint – but let Him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.

Aim to comprehend this love of God in Christ! Be exceedingly joyous in being the beloved, for many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.

Christ is all that we have! Christ is all that we need!

Take heart, dear saint!

Reflect

1. Do you find the love of Christ as your greatest treasure?

2. Do you find the love of Christ as your highest pleasure?

3. Do you desire to love Him more, as you ought to be?

Remember

Those who have truly understood the love of Christ are the ones who are desiring to reciprocate His far excellent love. To be satisfied in Him and His will alone is always the result.

Read

Deuteronomy 10:12-15; Joshua 23:11; John 14:15-21

Pray

Father, we come to you in prayer again, and in the name of your Son, to keep on asking the greatest gift that we could ever ask, and that is to behold Him who is worthy of all of our affections, more and more, and to know His far excellent love deeply in our lives. May it be our confidence to stand in this unchangeable truth, that your Son is truly for us, and whatever situation or circumstance where are in, may we always abound in joy and thanksgiving that we have Him as our Lover, Leader, and Lord. This we pray in His Name, Amen.
