Sustained by Divine Love

Updated: Oct 29, 2021

Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 2:5-6

Sustain me with raisins;

refresh me with apples,

for I am sick with love.

His left hand is under my head,

and his right hand embraces me!

Song of Solomon 2:5-6

There are questions in our Christian life which will be of great help to have a greater, exalted, deeper, wider view of Christ. If we are to ask ourselves with questions that will lead us to a greater beholding of God’s rich grace in the Beloved [Christ], what kind of questions those would be? Part of those questions would have to be in relation to sustenance, which we absolutely have in our Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ. What holds all things together? What holds our divided heart? What holds our disunited soul? It is definitely the love of the Beloved [Christ] which we truly need in this life; the love which has been founded by the Father in Christ from eternity to eternities. This is the love that is truly better than life. The love which surpasses all human knowledge. Yes, that love which we should never stop aiming to comprehend that we may have the fullness of Him, our Lover-Redeemer, Christ Jesus!

Our passage for today continues to picture the greatest love story that one can hear, and that is the love between the Beloved [Christ], and His bride [Church]. With the poem that we have, here we see that the maiden continues to show the deepest longing of a heart that has been awaken in the wonders of the heart of God in the Lover-Redeemer – Christ. As the dialogue continues: “Sustain me with raisins; refresh me with apples, for I am sick of love” (v.5); here we see an earnest longing of the wholeness and completeness in the intimacy that the maiden [Church] and the Beloved [Christ] had, as she asks for its permanency. She thought of enjoying food (celebration of the love and intimacy that they have) with her Beloved in their outdoor secluded place. Also, she endlessly pictures herself under the Divine love or Divine caress of her Beloved [Christ], which gives her heart the peace that surpasses all human understanding.

Yes, we must have a ceaseless desire of having much of Christ’s love, for it is what we truly need. We need it every moment of our lives! We need it to be engraved deeply in our hearts, that in every turn we live in His everlasting love – this divine love that gave us life! It is the believer’s sustenance! For where would we be without the love of the Beloved [Christ]?

The real believer’s heart is awakened to perceive the wonders of God in the person of our Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ! From there, we learn to enthusiastically acclaim, oh taste and see that the LORD is good!

He who does not want know more of Him, knows nothing of Him yet…

Hear this then, dear saint! But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.

Desire communion with Him, who has loved us eternally! Thirst and long for Him! Be in awe of Him, the darling of Heaven! He is all yours… He is all-perfect, all-holy, all-glorious and all-happy! Be exceedingly joyous in being His beloved. If you have truly seen Him, then He is your exceeding joy.

Nobody loves you like He does…

Christ is all that we have! Christ is all that we need!

Take heart, dear saint!

Reflect

1. Do you find yourself as worthless, meaningless, and restless apart from the sustaining divine love of Christ?

2. Do you see Christ’s divine love surrounding you?

3. Do you desire and long to love Him more, as you ought to be?

Remember

The person of Christ is the only fountain of which our souls find never ending satisfaction. It is our sustenance as we approach eternity – never ending enjoyment and celebration of intimacy with the Beloved [Christ].

Pray

Father, we come before You in prayer, with such confidence because of who we are and what we have in Your own dear Son, that through Him we have been made recipient of Your everlasting love, and we can approach before Your throne knowing that You will not reject us. Father, we ask that You make our hearts so captivated by Your Son, that in this life we may learn to truly cherish Him, for He is all that we need, and all that we really have. It doesn’t matter what’s lacking in us, as long as we have Him, our Beloved. This we pray, in His Name. Amen.
