Respect and Fulfill the Oath You Have Made

Updated: Jul 16, 2021

Scripture Text: Joshua 2:14-21

And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear. But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.”

Joshua 2:14‭, ‬17‭, ‬20

The messengers of God (two Israelite spies) and Rahab (innkeeper) all respected and fulfilled the oath they have made. So, God saved and blessed Rahab and her family (Joshua 6:17, 25)

God alone swore by Himself that surely He will bless Abraham and multiply his descendants as many as the stars in the sky. The Lord alone guaranteed it with an oath, and He respected and fulfilled His oath He made to Abraham.

When God the Father promised through the prophets that He is sending His only begotten Son on earth to save the world, He fulfilled it! Our Lord is an unchangeable God. Indeed it is impossible for Him to lie. That's why He set Himself as an example on how to fulfill the promise.

Our Lord Jesus Christ reminded His followers that any promises that have been made must be respected and must be fulfilled because this is His will for His people.

  • When you promised to serve God through the church, you must do the said promise without hesitation.

  • When you promised to meditate God's word day and night, you must do it by heart.

  • When you promised to offer your givings to the Lord through the church, you must do what you committed for the glory of God.

  • When you promised to help believers or unbelievers whether small or big, you need to respect it and fulfill it.

But our Lord Jesus Christ warned His followers also; do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, or by earth or any other oaths because anything more than this comes from evil, and may fall under condemnation. Jesus said; simply say 'Yes’ or ‘No’; Apostle James said also, to let your yes be yes and your no be no.

Reflect

1. Do you still have an unfinished oath to be fulfilled?

2. Do you ask forgiveness from the Lord for your unfulfilled oath?

3. Do you ask wisdom from the Holy Spirit before you take an oath?

Remember

If you want to glorify God, respect and fulfill the oath you have made. If you fail to fulfill the oath, expect the consequences to happen to you because God is a just God.

Pray

Dear God,

Please help me not to break the promises and commitments I made to You through Christ Jesus, to the church, to my co-believers, and even to unbelievers and to my family.

I ask the Holy Spirit for more wisdom on how to protect my spiritual testimony. Help me Lord to respect and fulfill any promise and not break the oath I made.

I ask this in the most gracious name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
