Overcoming the Giant Fear

Updated: Jun 24, 2022

Scripture Text: Joshua 11:21-22

And Joshua came at that time and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities.

There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.

Joshua 11:21-22

Joshua cutting off Anakim was highly significant. This race of giants, besides those spies under Moses who felt like "grasshoppers" (Numbers 13:33). 10 of the 12 spies were terrified and prompted Israel to shrink back in fear. Anakim was related to the Nephilim (Genesis 6:4) and was named after its forefather, Anak. Then, Joshua shared with Caleb his victory over Anakites (Joshua 14:12-15 / 15:13-14).

In our passage, the author mentioned that there was no Anakim left in the whole area of Israel except in Gaza, Gath, and in Ashdod. That is why during David's time, there were still giants especially in Philistine and one of them was Goliath, the 9 feet tall, famous and greatest warrior of Philistine (1 Samuel 17:4) whom the Israelites had feared so much, both the armies and the people.

However, the Lord used a young shepherd boy named David to cut off the uncircumcised giant. The Lord used Joshua, Caleb ,and David to cut off all the giants in Israel. The Lord gave them power, strength, and courage to defeat those giant enemies. Because of their faith and trust with the Lord, His presence was with them always.

Therefore, as children of God, He will assure us that we will overcome the giant fear in our lives if we have faith in Christ, if we entrust our lives to Him. That is why the presence of the Holy Spirit is always with us. He is encouraging us to ask help from Him through prayer and He assured us that He will answer our plea (Matthew 21:22).

Reflect

1. What is your greatest fear in life?

2. Do you ask help from God through Jesus Christ to overcome your giant fear?

Remember

To overcome the giant fear in our lives, we need Jesus! Because He is the only source of everything we need: power, strength, and all else.

He said to them, Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith? And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

Mark 4:40-41
