Never Break What You Promised

Scripture Text: Malachi 2:10-17

Don't you know that we all have God as our Father? Didn't the one God create each of us? Then why do you cheat each other by breaking the agreement God made with your ancestors?

Malachi 2:10

No genuine Christian can question God about His faithfulness. Truly, God is faithful and He never fails to honor His covenant and promises to our spiritual ancestors. The reason why God rebuked His people and didn't accept their gift-offerings was because they did evil things. Their hearts were full of evil.

  • They did not honor the covenant that their ancestors made with God (v.10c)

  • They did not respect the Lord's Holy Temple (v.11b)

  • They were marrying foreign goddesses (v.11c) (Ezra 9:2: that's why the holy temple of God was contaminated)

  • They worshipped foreign idols (v.11c)

  • People cheated on one another (v.10c, 11a)

  • Husbands cheated on their wives (v.14b, 16c)

  • Husbands divorced their wives (v.16a)

Faithfulness is very important to God that's why He wants them to repent from their sins and be transformed to be right children of God because He loves His kingdom people.

He chose us to share life with his Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and He is the fulfilment of the covenant up to eternal life. We are blessed because we are under Christ's grace. But, our Lord reminds us that He is also a just God! If we continue to be stubborn, unfaithful, and breaker of the covenant, we will suffer the consequences—

Psalm 73:27 (ESV)

For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.

John 3:36 (ESV)

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

While awaiting for the final coming of our Lord Jesus,

  1. We must remain faithful and not break the covenant with our One and only True God-Jesus Christ because without Him, we are nothing.

  2. We must be faithful and not break the covenant with our home church because Jesus is head of the church.

  3. We must be faithful to our spiritual family because God is pleased if His family is united and happy.

  4. The husband must be faithful to his wife and never break the covenant with God and with his wife, because God assigned him to love his family.

  5. The wife must be faithful to her husband and never break the covenant with him especially with God to show her true humility, submission, and support to her family.

  6. The children must be faithful to their parents to show love, respect, and honor to them because God anointed parents for their good.

Reflect

  1. Are you faithful to God because you are after his blessings? Or is it because you simply want to honor him?

  2. Would you still be faithful to God despite passing through difficult times?

  3. If Jesus came, will God find you faithful to him, to the church, and to your spouse?

Remember

  • Faithfulness to Christ Jesus is the most important mark of Christians with genuine faith.

  • We should never break God's covenant until our last breath by the help of the Holy Spirit.

  • God remains faithful to His covenant and promises up to eternity!

Pray

Dear God, thank you for the Holy Spirit, for reminding me for the unfaithfulness I've done especially to You, to my home church, and to my spouse/family. Please help me not to break the divine covenant You made for us and guard my heart not to neglect my duty, responsibility, and obligation as one of your people. In Jesus' Name, amen!
