Interruption of Communion With Christ – What Do You Feel?

Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 2:7

Promise me, women of Jerusalem;

swear by the swift deer and the gazelles

that you will not interrupt our love.

Song of Solomon 2:7 (GNT)

To those whose hearts are right with God, automatically, you can expect from them that Christ is their exceeding joy. They simply treasure Christ the most, and they make Him their supreme and ultimate satisfaction and consolation. With this kind of heart, it is easy to see the obvious: the rejoicing and longing to see Him or be with Him. How we wish that we had this very heart! Having this very heart will surely result to an endless agreement that His steadfast love is better than life! A heart that is awakened in the wonders of God in the Beloved [Christ] sees the most beauty in the Bridegroom [Christ]. To them, all excellencies are in Him to the highest degree! With this beholding, the heart is exploding with an earnest desire of having an eternal communion with Him.

As the poem from Chapter 1 to this very passage progresses, we see how the love of the Beloved [Christ] to the maiden [Church], and vice versa, unfolds. Moreover, with this very verse, we have a clear sight that the scenarios taking place in the poem are part of the daydreaming/vision of the maiden out of her desperate desire of being with her Beloved: “I adjure you, o daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases” (v.7). This charge to the daughters of Jerusalem is a reminder that we are not to imagine the couple together in intimacy described in the previous lines (v.6) with the daughters of Jerusalem standing around and taking note. Yet, in her dream-like state, the maiden pleads with them to not interrupt.

“Do not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases” (v.7); there are possible meanings to this phrase in general:

(1) it could be not interrupting the sweet dream of love the maiden enjoys, drawing her back to the reality of awaiting the presence of her Beloved [Christ]; and

(2) it could be a call generally to all that the process of loving exchange must not begin until the appropriate occasion is present—do not start unless it can be complete.

The idea is both simple and dynamic. The maiden wants none of the onlookers to hinder or interrupt their love until it is fulfilled. We may say this is true both in the sense of their relationship and in the sense of their passion. In terms of their relationship, it can mean, “let our love grow until it is perfect and fruitful!” In terms of passion, it can mean, “let our union continue without any interruption until we are both fulfilled.”

By any sense, interruption is never an option for a believer! There must be an extreme whining when being disturbed from a very blessed and desirable situation—communion with the Beloved [Christ]! That is why we must give charge to everyone, even to the nearest and dearest connections, that we be not interrupted when we are having a personal time with the King! We must always keep in mind that it is still infinitely more blessed to have a sweet communion with Jesus alone. There may be, and perhaps there often is, much or myriad talking of the Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ, while on the other hand there is little of walking with Him. The saying is trustworthy, “being much busy in the Kingdom, but not with the King.”

The real believer’s heart is awakened to perceive the wonders of God in the person of our Lover-Redeemer, Jesus Christ! From there, we learn to enthusiastically acclaim, oh taste and see that the LORD is good!

He who does not want know more of Him, knows nothing of Him yet…

Hear this then, dear saint! The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.

Desire communion with Him, who has loved us eternally! Thirst and long for Him! Be in awe of Him, the darling of Heaven! He is all yours… He is all-perfect, all-holy, all-glorious and all-happy! Be exceedingly joyous in being His beloved. If you have truly seen Him, then He is your exceeding joy.

Nobody loves you like He does…

Christ is all that we have! Christ is all that we need!

Take heart, dear saint!

Reflect

1. Do you see yourself as the great interruption for having time with the Lord?

2. Is your heart totally consumed with the desire of being with Christ all the time?

3. Do you desire and long to love Him more, as you ought to be?

Remember

A lover of Christ will never leave His presence without being satisfied and contented with His love. His day and even his entire life will be an overflow of the steadfast love of Christ.

Pray

Father, I come before You in the richness of Your grace in Your Son, to ask boldly of what is lacking in me, to have an undivided heart for Your Son. I seek to have a greater passion and yearning for His presence, to have a wider and deeper desire of being satisfied in the manifestation of His person. May You allow me, Father, to see this as I seek Him, not blindly, but through Your Words. This I pray, in His name. Amen.
