Human Desire and Disappointment

Scripture Text: Judges 14:1-4

Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. Then he came up and told his father and mother, “I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife.”

But his father and mother said to him, “Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.”

Judges‬ ‭14:1-3

Manoah and his wife wanted their son Samson to take a wife from their relatives, clan, or among Israel people because that was part of the Lord's instructions for His chosen people.

The author also emphasized that Samson's parents desired for him not to intermarry with the inhabitants in the land of Canaan because they will lead him to apostasy (Exodus 34:16, Deuteronomy 7:1, 3, Joshua 23:11-13, Judges 3:5-6, 1 Kings 11:2, Ezra 9:2). However, Samson ignored and rejected the good advice of his parents. Instead, he took a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines. That was a big disappointment on the part of Samson's parents.

However, his parents did not know that this was of the Lord, for He was seeking an occasion against the Philistines. That's why He made Samson desire that woman. At that time, the Philistines were in control over Israel (v. 4).

Therefore, as believers-followers of Christ Jesus, we cannot question His will for His people. And as a Christian parent, my desire and prayer for my children when it comes to their marriage is the full blessing of God. I pray that the good Lord provide them the right partner in life, with a godly character, and with the same faith to Jesus. I'm pretty sure that the Lord is really blessing them well.

We all know that marriage is a God-ordained, covenant relationship between a man and a woman. Therefore, when you engage to this holy sacrament, rest assured that your partner is truly given by God to you!

That's why Apostle Paul reminded all believers to follow God's commands and all His instructions. Through this. our Lord is pleased and glorified.‬‬

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭6:14,‬ ‭ESV)

Reflect

1. Do you desire the right partner in life with a godly character and with the same faith to Jesus?

2. Do you want to avoid disappointments in life? Seriously follow and obey the Lord's commands!

Remember

If we allow God to control us and we live with a righteous lives, and if we acknowledge Him as our God, Lord and Savior and we faithfully worship, serve and obey all His commandments, He will be a Father to us and we shall be His sons and daughters to Him, says the Lord Almighty.

Pray

Dear God,

Thank you for even in choosing our lifetime partners, You make sure that it brings You glory and honor, and make sure that it brings us joy and satisfaction.

You are a wonderful God, mighty, and strong. But overall, very loving. You loved us so much that You prepare every detail of story, including that of our spouse, even before we were born.

Thank you Lord, in Jesus name, Amen!
