God has Blessed Us in Christ – Bless Him!

Scripture Text: Ephesians 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

Ephesians 1:3

“Blessing/s” is one of the words we encounter daily in our Christian life that has lost its impact due to our immature and often cold comprehension of it. This poor understanding has even led us to creating our own idea of categorizing “big” and “small blessings”. When we say blessing, one must keep in mind that this is given by God and for His glory alone. Not that we deserve it, nor that we have worked hard for it (as a merit to us), but this is freely given by Him who has created all things for Him! For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. To bring back the impact of the word “blessing” to us, it is good to be reminded or even instructed by the Scripture on how should we understand blessing.

Blessings must be understood in light of the true reality of mankind – cursed and doomed, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God! Each day is passing where we think that we are entitled to be blessed, neglecting the reality that we are supposed to be reaping our own downfall or depravity.

Blessings are given by God who is merciful, and being blessed is a state that He has graciously and lovingly bestowed upon those who are already found in Christ [in union with the Lord Jesus Christ]!

In our passage, we can see the drawn line where we should fix our standing: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places (v.3).” God has not just sovereignly chosen to bless us (placed us in the state of blessedness), but He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing! Not big, not small, not special, not common! This is supreme blessing! In other words, this is total blessing, in which one can never really understand in his limited capacity! “Spiritual blessing” here does not refer to our known tangible or intangible blessings, it goes beyond that. This must be understood properly that it speaks of the work of God, who is the divine and the spiritual source of all blessings! This work is what the Lord Christ Jesus acquired by His own virtue and merit, such as His righteousness as man (obedient servant to the Father), rewards, privilege, position, and power. These superabundant blessings belong only to believers who are His children in Christ [those whom He placed in union with the Lord Jesus Christ].

With this, indeed, the Lord, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ must be truly praised! Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

Dear saint, may your heart truly bless and praise Him, who has powerfully and intimately chosen to bless you in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. For this is our supreme duty - Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits!

Ultimately, the enjoyment of God in Christ is the only joy and happiness with which our souls can be truly and magnificently satisfied.

Desire to know Him more, who has loved you unconditionally and eternally! Thirst and long for Him! Be in awe of Him – the darling of Heaven! He is all yours… He is all-perfect, all-holy, all-glorious!

Hear this then, dear saint: And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Christ is all that we have! Christ is all that we need!

Take heart, dear saint!

Reflect

1. How much do you value your blessedness in Christ?

2. Does your blessedness in Christ propel and compel you to praise God?

3. Do you desire and long to love Him more, as you ought to be?

Remember

Every blessing from God and our Father are means to keep us back on our chief end – to glorify God, and enjoy Him forever! Live your life, therefore, for the praise of His glory, and continue to live out your blessedness in Him!

Pray

Father in Heaven, I come before You, in the name of Your Son, to sincerely praise and thank You, for blessing me abundantly in Him, who is my Lord and Savior. I pray, Father, that with this comprehension and apprehension of my blessedness, may You use this to create in me a humble heart, a heart that will never stop singing Your praises, and a heart that will always long to know more of my Messiah Jesus, that I may truly give to You what is really due to You – Your glory in the Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name I pray, Amen.
