Do Not Boast of Yourself

Scripture Text: Judges 7:1-7

The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

Judges 7:2

Prior to the battle, the Spirit of the Lord filled Gideon and took control of him. He used him to lead Israel and deliver them from the enemies: Midian, Amalekites, and their allies. Then Gideon blew the trumpet to call the warriors of Israel and sent messengers to the tribes of Manasseh, Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went to meet them. They gathered 32,000 Israelite warriors and encamped beside the spring river of Harod, in the southern part of Jordan, while the Midianites and their allies encamped in the hill valley of Moreh, in the northern part of Jordan.

The Lord instructed Gideon to reduce the number of Israelite warriors from 32,000 to 300 for the following reasons:

  1. The Lord didn't want the Israelites to boast over Him (v. 2). God made it clear from the very beginning that the glory for this victory was to be His alone.

  2. Some Israelite warriors were fearful of dying (v. 3). That's why the Mosaic laws allowed military exemptions for several classes of people, including those who were fearful (Deut. 20:5-8), as they might cause others to fear.

  3. Other Israelite warriors did not pass the final test due to their attitude problems (vv. 4-7). Only the final 300 warriors who passed the attitude test were chosen.

God always makes a way for the sake of His people because He loves them. That's why His grace was given to save His people. As believers and followers of Christ, we have no right to boast when it comes to our physical and spiritual salvation.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Reflect

Are you honoring the Lord in every victory of your life battles?

Pray

Dear Father,

Grant me the humility to surrender my own doubts, fears, and reliance on human strength. As Gideon's army was reduced, let me also learn to release any false sense of control or reliance on external circumstances. Help me realize that victory comes not through might nor numbers alone, but through alignment with your will and the power of faith.

In times when I face overwhelming situations or seemingly insurmountable challenges, remind me that you are always by my side. Strengthen my faith and give me the courage to stand firm, even when the odds seem against me. Teach me to rely not on my own understanding, but on your wisdom and guidance.

Just as Gideon sought your reassurance through signs, I pray that you would reveal your presence and guidance to me. Open my eyes to the signs and synchronicities that affirm your hand at work in my life. Grant me discernment to recognize your voice amidst the noise of the world.

Thank you, Divine Spirit, for the lessons embedded in this biblical passage. May the principles of faith, trust, and divine guidance permeate every aspect of my life, empowering me to face challenges with courage and conviction.

In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
