Claim God's Promises

Scripture Text: Joshua 14:1-15

Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God. And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’

Joshua 14:6‭-‬9

When Moses sent the 12 spies of Israel to explore the land of Canaan, the Lord brought them in the area of Hebron, formerly Kiriath-arba. Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim where Abram built an altar to the Lord (Genesis 13:18).

After they explored the land, they went back to Moses and immediately made a report.

The 10 spies reported negatively about the place, causing the hearts of the Israelites to melt. That's why the Lord punished them—because they caused fear and lied. However, the 2 remaining spies, Joshua and Caleb, reported positively about the place: that the land was so beautiful, the soil was fertile, full of bearing trees, good crops, etc.

The Lord was glorified with the reports done by Joshua and Caleb and the Lord told Moses to give that land to Caleb and to his clan as inheritance. That's why Caleb claimed the place of Hebron from Joshua per God's promise to him through Moses. Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, as an inheritance, because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel (Joshua 14:13).

Joshua and Caleb were the living witnesses of the fulfilment of God's covenant to Abraham by receiving the inheritance. They wholly followed, obeyed, worshiped, and served the Lord. That's why God allowed them to enter the Promised Land. They enjoyed the land given by God as inheritance for their rest and source of their daily provision. They enjoyed favors from God like total protection, long life, strength, and wisdom. They enjoyed the presence of the Lord until their last breath.

Therefore, the Lord reminded all the followers-believers of Christ on how to continue to obey and follow the Lord. The prophets, disciples/apostles, and early Christians all did the same. They were all faithful to God and they are enjoying their eternal inheritance in heaven right now!

Reflect

1. Do you want to see yourself as a faithful servant of the Lord?

2. Do you want to experience and enjoy the favors of God like total protection, long life, strength, wisdom and His total presence?

3. Do you want to experience and enjoy the goodness and grace of the Lord through eternal inheritance?

CLAIM it NOW!

Remember

When we follow and obey God, He will grant all our claims to His promises, because no one can come to Jesus unless it is granted to Him by the Father.

Pray

Dear God, I acknowledge that You are true to Your promises. I acknowledge that You fulfilled Your covenant to Abraham through the land inheritance given to Your people (Israelites). I acknowledge also that You extended Your grace and mercy to us even though we are Gentiles. Thank You for Your unending love. Jesus, thank You for the salvation and eternal inheritance You have given us and thank You for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' Name. Amen!
